He is risen!

Lord I lift your name on high
Lord I love to sing your praises
I’m so glad you’re in my life
I’m so glad you came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth, to show the way
From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay
From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky
Lord I lift your name on high

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10 v 9

WORDS OF THE DAY: ‘der god yoo luv me and i luv yoo too.’ When a four year old writes that on their Easter decoration craft you pray hard that they’ll know Jesus!

Happy Easter!

Small-town Life

A week has gone by in Peebles now, and I’m getting used to the small-town life. People don’t exaggerate when they say everyone knows everyone – it means that doing a ‘quick bit of shopping’ always takes longer than expected!

This first week has been about getting to know how the different clubs work and finding my way around (not that it took very long, you can pretty much walk anywhere in less than 10 minutes). The couple I’m staying with, Laura and Gordon, are looking after me so well; they organise and run all of the kids clubs in Peebles, and there’s 6 over the course of the week for all different age groups.
Tuesdays is Smarties (an afterschool club for P3-6 – 7-10 yr olds? I’m still getting my head around the Scottish schools system), then 712 club in the evening (for P7 and S1-2 – ie yr 6-8). Wednesday is another after school club called Smileys for P1-2 (the cuties). Thursday and Friday are both lunchtime clubs called Adventurers at two local primary schools, then Sunday club is during the morning church service.
It all adds up to a lot of prep for both the stories and the crafts/games for each club! At the moment we are well immersed in all things Easter: Laura and Gordon have an office which is full of cabinets and boxes of resources, and this morning the floor was covered in shredded yellow paper, foam crosses and fluffy chicks.

In between times, I have folded hundreds of leaflets for the Easter holiday club, cut out donkeys for the wee kiddies crafts and made palm branches for the kids to wave at church (classic Palm Sunday). It seems that every day features the words ‘I’ve had an idea…’ before Gordon and I are creating something new, overseen by Laura the taskmaster. I’m really enjoying getting more involved with all the work they do!

Yesterday I led the story at Smarties where we were learning about Jesus’ death on the cross – next week is the resurrection. I also got to share my testimony with the guys at 712 club which was great.

The weather has been amazing so far (surprisingly) – I came to Scotland ready for constant rain but I’m so glad that hasn’t been the case! Peebles is such a beautiful little town. There’s lush walks along the river and so many little spots to catch the sun when it’s out.
On Monday we took a mini-day-trip/drive to St Mary’s Loch, Grey Mare’s Tail Reserve (the 5th tallest waterfall in Britain apparently woop) and ended up in Moffat for coffee + cake, which is another town just like Peebles about an hour away. It was amazing driving through all this Scottish countryside: it’s just hills after hills and it made me wonder again at God’s amazing creativity.

EDINBURGH RECOMMENDATIONS #2: Go to Mimi’s, like now. Especially if you love cheesecake as much as me.

OVERHEARD AT DINNER: ‘Sausages are my life.’ We had a family round for Sunday lunch which was fun – feeding the ducks and playing in the park was a great way to spend the afternoon.

GAME OF THE WEEK: It took me a few tries but I eventually managed to knock down the pringle tube with my shoe from across the hall. The race/competition element were a bit stressful at first.

OVERHEARD AT KIDS CLUB: ‘I’m giving up chocolate for Lent’, while happily chomping a dairy milk bar. I don’t think he realised how close Easter was.

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK: I’ve been amazed again by maybe the fundamental of faith this week – Salvation. ‘Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved’ says Acts 16v31, but we have to hold this together with James 2v24-26 which says ‘…you see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone…as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead’. Works don’t save us (hallelujah for Easter), but they show we have been saved.

Transformation of the total person is at the heart of the gospel message. If responding to the good news of Jesus Christ does not lead us to becoming followers of Jesus, taking him as our model and example and, by the power of the Holy Spirit within us, growing more Christ-like in the way we live, we haven’t truly understood it or experienced it’s power in our lives.’

Coming up … Tonight is Home Group bible study with some guys from church, tomorrow evening we’re going to the High School for their Spring Concert. This Easter Sunday there’s a baptism too, and on Easter Monday it’s the High School’s Easter service.

Please pray…

  • For Laura as she prepares her message for the High School service – it’s such a great opportunity to share with the school what Jesus means today
  • For me preparing the story of the resurrection for the Smarties next week; that the kids will understand how incredible this good news is!
  • For preparation for the holiday club and that lots of kids will be open to coming along, even if they’re not regulars at the clubs

Bouncing back to Scotland

So I’ve now landed in Peebles where I will be spending the next four weeks. It was so nice to catch up with the parents and spend the weekend at home, but I’m excited for this next instalment!

The second two weeks at Tilsley passed by so quickly, I couldn’t believe that leaving came round so fast. Our week of studies on Acts and World Religions was followed by a week of Pneumatology (Holy Spirit studies). I found all the classes so interesting – even if some left me with more questions than answers! I’ve been challenged to think about things from a different perspective – often lectures became a discussion group about questions I had never thought of before.

We got to know the rest of the Tilsley family better too – it feels like I’ve known them for much longer than a month! March 1st was marked with daffodils and welsh flags, as Sam and Joel were not about to let us forget their patron saint’s day. Our third and final Sunday in college included dinner à la Jess (probably The Best Mash I’ve tasted), and me and Em were able to make cheesecake for everyone too. It also featured a family walk in Strathclyde Park (although in the afternoon, not the crack of dawn this time).
Last Thursday we had a trip altogether to the Sikh Gurdwara in Glasgow which followed on from our course in World Religions. It was a new experience for me – so interesting to hear from people who practice and live the Sikh faith.

Mine and Emily’s weekend excursions continued too (might as well make the most of Scotland, seeing as Em has to fly to get up here!). We found a playground in Strathclyde park (can never be too excited by swings), explored Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Park in Glasgow and went ice-skating in Hamilton (Charlene and I managed to coax Bambi away from the side woop).

My last couple of placements at Netherburn Primary and Calderwood Baptist Youth Group went smoothly. For my last week at Netherburn, Naomi and I lead the story which happened to be the crucifixion. It was a privilege to be able to explain to the kids about the cross and what Jesus has done for us – I’m so thankful that the kids have this club that they can go to each week. I also went to help out at the Oasis soup kitchen which is held at Roman Road (the church me and Em went along to). It was quite challenging, but amazing to chat to some of these people and hear their stories.

GLASGOW RECOMMENDATIONS: For the best soup and the biggest choice of bread to accompany it (sweet potato and almond anyone? Or maybe you’d like to try Banana and pecan?), try Singl-end Café Bakehouse and you won’t be disappointed.

GAME OF THE WEEK: Possibly the most competitive game of Pictionary I’ve played – it was boys vs. girls on movies. Getting them to draw ‘Persuasion’ was great entertainment, but not great when reciprocated by a-movie-noone-had-heard-of-featuring-japanese-warriors.

NIGHT-IN DREAM: Wild Child + Ben and Jerrys Dough-ble Impact Core? Yes Please. (Sorry Em for quoting the film as it went along)

NIGHT-UP DREAM: Making cheesecake at midnight is made all the more enjoyable by blasting Taylor Swift in the kitchen.

CLOSE SHAVE: Big shout-out to Naomi and Sarah who woke me up at 7.50 on Saturday morning. Yep, I really did make that 8.05 train back to Newcastle.

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK: Revelation 2v1-7 is a letter to the church in Ephesus. It says how they have lost the love they had at first – that is, their passion for Jesus. Ezekiel 36v26 says ‘I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.’ It’s amazing that God covers us with His grace even when we haven’t been loving Him, but He gives us a new heart and teaches us to love Him more.

Coming up … We’re starting with a bang tomorrow – it’s an early morning start with a meeting to organise a high school assembly, then kids clubs later in the afternoon and evening. The rest of the week will be filled with more clubs at different primary schools.

Please pray …

  • That I’ll settle in quickly in Peebles and won’t be too overwhelmed by meeting lots of new people at once
  • For the students at Tilsley; they are all preparing to go away on their month placements whether staying in the UK or travelling to France, Albania, Nepal…
  • That I’ll be able to keep building on everything I’ve learnt so far, even though there’s no daily lectures
